Step One: “We admitted that we are powerless over the circumstances of our childhood and/or adolescence —that our lives had become unmanageable” practicing the “principle of honesty.”
For I know that in me, (that is, in my flesh,) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. Now if I do what I will to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. (Roman 7:18-20)
The first step is about coming out of denial, which disables your feelings by disconnecting and freezing your emotions binding you to sin. Understanding your emotions and feelings is what gives you self-understanding. The solution for denial is then acceptance. When you are able to admit that your life is out of control and you are powerless to obtain the control you desire. Admitting that you cannot heal yourself, admitting that others cannot heal you, and admitting that only God could, open the door. You open your hardened heart to God, and begin to develop a relationship with God through Jesus Christ that will restore your soul. You admit that you are powerless, that you cannot control the situation that happened in your past; you let go of your ego control needs, to surrender in God’s arms.
